How to Wash Your Comforters and Duvets

Whether your comforters and duvets lasts for 5 or 15 years does not only depend on its quality (though it is an important factor) it also depends on how well the duvet is maintained. Do you want to enjoy your new duvet for as long as possible? Here are a few guidelines you can follow to ensure maximum longevity of your down duvet.

How Often to Clean Comforters, Duvets and Pillows

Believe it or not, night after night your bedding gets dirtier and dirtier, even if you can not see it. Unless the comforter has something spilled on it, you won’t need to wash it more than once or twice a year. The cover, however, will need to be washed weekly. If you consistently use a top sheet, you might be able to stretch this and wash your comforter every two to four weeks.

Machine Wash or Dry Clean?

Depending on the material as well as the size of your comforter/duvet will determine whether to machine wash or dry clean. Check the label on your duvet or comforter to see what material it is made with and what the washing instructions are, as each material requires its own maintenance process. Most common materials are:

  • wool
  • down feather
  • and synthetic
Wool Comforters and Duvets Should Be Dry Cleaned

It is best to dry clean wool, as wool has a soft, protective, and water resistant layer called lanolin. Normal washing can weaken this layer permanently. Wool also shrinks and stiffens when washed, defiantly not something you would want in your comforter.

Down & Synthetic Comforters and Duvets Should Be Washed

For a down and synthetic comforter washing is best. Now you’re probably thinking: I can do that myself right? In theory, yes, you can. Do keep in mind that the comforter needs a generous amount of room in the washing machine. Stuffing your comforter in a small/normal machine may lower the cost, but your comforter wont be cleaned properly. Lack of space means insufficient water and detergent reaching the material. A large dryer is also important. One with enough room to circulate the comforter with warm air. A comforter needs to be dried quickly to prevent bad odour’s.
